Boomer Excels with Leadership Award
Lisburn-based Boomer Industries, manufacturers in the design and provision of customised PVC extrusions, have been awarded the prestigious Excel Award for business Management and Leadership. Now in its fifth year, the Excel Award is organised by the Management & Leadership Network (MLN) in partnership with the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICC), in recognition of Management and Leadership excellence in small and medium enterprises (SME’s).
Managing Director, Andrew Robinson, and Human Resources Manager, Janet Little, entered the Award to celebrate the success of Boomer’s major strategy rethink, a process which began following a management buy-out in 2001.
The remodelling of the business deployed initiatives which included a substantial investment for relocation to purpose built premises. The changing physical structure of Boomer was matched with an overhaul of internal processes and an increasingly competitive market.
Andrew Robinson said: “We recognised that a significant part of our transformation had to focus on the development of our people, at every level. This change was not simply a strengthening of skill sets, it has been a shift in culture, building on a strong heritage, and ensuring that our employees are provided with an environment in which they truly feel that they contribute to the ongoing success of the company.”
He added: “This journey hasn’t always been comfortable, or predictable. To guide our team, we implemented management best practice tools such as the EFQM Excellence Model – a self-assessment process designed to optimise strengths and to enhance customer service and satisfaction. Investors in People Accreditation, ISO 9001 and 14001 also contributed as formative structures for specific skills training and team building.”
“The outcome has been a significant rise in turnover, profitability, operational efficiencies, improved morale and a stronger strategic position in the marketplace.”
