SwissSWISS Carries Record 12.2 million Passengers in 2007

SWISS transported 12,208,558 passengers on its scheduled services last year – the first time in its history that annual passenger numbers have exceeded 12 million, and a 13.2 per cent increase on the 10.8 million of 2006. While total production was increased by a substantial 13.1 per cent, the additional capacity was fully absorbed by the market, and SWISS even raised its systemwide seat load factor to 80.2 per cent, a marginal improvement on the 79.8 per cent of the previous year. Slight increases were seen in seat load factor for both intercontinental and European services: seat load factor on intercontinental routes stood at 84.3 per cent (2006: 83.8 per cent), while seat load factor on the European network amounted to 71.8 per cent (2006: 71.3 per cent).

A total of 1,001,765 passengers travelled on SWISS in December 2007, a 10.4 per cent increase on the 907,092 of the pervious year period. And despite a sizeable increase in capacity, the 78.2 per cent seat load factor recorded for the month was only slightly below the 79.7 per cent of December 2006.

December seat load factor on intercontinental services was a 0.5-percentage-point improvement on the previous year month. While total production saw a 12.6 per cent increase in available seat-kilometre (ASK) terms, total traffic volume in revenue passenger-kilometres (RSK) was 13.4 per cent up on its previous year equivalent.

Seat load factor on European services was also up 0.5 percentage points on December 2006. With total ASK production showing a 14 per cent increase, total RSK traffic volume was 14.7 per cent higher than for the previous year period.

The airfreight business of Swiss WorldCargo showed positive trends last year. Total cargo tonne-kilometres sold were an 8.2 per cent improvement on 2006; and cargo load factor (by volume), while slipping from 85.5 per cent to 84.6 per cent, still remained at an encouragingly high level.
