Mentholatum Muscles Up Growth For Scotland
The Mentholatum Company has being enjoying excellent growth of late and it is bringing the benefits of that growth to Scotland.
The company’s success has come principally from the development of the UK Deep Heat muscle and joint relief brands, as well as incredible success in developing international markets.
Apart from Deep Heat, Mentholatum also produces well known brands such as Oxy and Softlips at its factory in Scotland. This factory, situated in East Kilbride, is set for a £10 million boost, which will bring more jobs to the area, provide stimulation for the local economy and also benefit a wide range of local businesses and organisations.
During his keynote speech at the Community Open Day, Mentholatum’s Managing Director and Vice President, Andrew Tasker, commented, “The £10 million investment demonstrates Mentholatum’s long-term commitment to Scotland and East Kilbride. We plan to increase production capacity and develop a state of the art R&D Centre and consolidate our position as a leading global healthcare specialist.”
Various local businesses are already benefiting from Mentholatum’s investment, including: Thermal Transfer, a facility project management provider in East Kilbride; Roadferry, a storage and distribution provider in Hamilton; Image Works, a graphic design/artwork supplier in Lanark and Smurfit, a shipping case manufacturer/supplier in Irvine.
Mentholatum is a company with an interesting past and a bright future. It is a subsidiary of the Japanese company Rhoto having been bought in 1988 after 99 years of private ownership. The company is now a multinational with manufacturing carried out in 26 locations around the globe and marketing/distribution in over 150 countries.
The Mentholatum Company’s key corporate philosophy is to drive real innovation to the end user. An example of this comes from Japan where over the last 12 months the business has launched over 60 new products, with the intention of making a difference to customers’ lives. As a result Mentholatum primarily concentrates on developing new products rather than acquiring existing brands.
Mentholatum’s dedication to product development and customer satisfaction is a key ingredient to its success in the marketplace and it is that focus which Mentholatum brings to the community of Kilbride. Andrew Tasker comments, “The importance of supporting the local community is a key priority for Mentholatum and will continue to be so. We already play an active role in supporting schools, the local football club and local charities and we are working to support other organisations in the local community.”
- The investment includes the design, construction, commissioning and validation of the new facility together with the procurement of new fully automated tube filling and packaging equipment.
- Mentholatum products are sold successfully across the world from Iceland in the north to South Africa in the south and from Ireland in the west to the eastern fringes of Russia. The company is achieving high levels of market leadership in over 140 countries.
- Mentholatum sponsors local football club Rolls Royce FC, which regularly uses Deep Heat and Freeze products on its players. The organisation has also recently formed a relationship with Shop Mobility at the East Kilbride Town Centre, which provides scooters and power chairs for those who find mobility difficult. In addition, Mentholatum has created growing links with local primary schools in the East Kilbride area and is keen to get involved in sponsoring events, such as fun runs or donating money in order for the schools to buy new equipment.
- The Mentholatum Company has taken a forward approach to supporting charities, in particular local branches and is committed to continuing this practice. In the past the company has provided support to a range of causes including The Meningitis Trust, Childline and The British Heart Foundation and also provided electrical equipment, such as IT hardware, to the Renfrewshire Association for Mental Health.
