Galgorm Spa Resort Soothes Economic Stress WIth Strong Profits

In an industry where the words profit, growth and continued employment are seldom heard in this current economic climate, Galgorm Resort & Spa is bucking the trend by posting sales and profit figures which many Irish hotels could only aspire to.

In October 2007, the luxurious resort had a profit of £188,000 based on a turnover of almost £5M. By October 2008 the profit had risen to £597,000 based on a turnover of just over £7M.

The management team set a challenging budget this year despite the economic climate and by October 2009, it is predicted that profit will be in excess of £1¼M with the revenue approaching £8M.  This equates to an increase in business of 8.6% in the past year and an increase in profits of more than 110%. To date this year, both profits and sales are on target. The additional profits at the resort have been achieved via a combination of increased sales and a systematic approach to reducing costs which involves staff at all levels. The current staff count stands at more than 150, the highest ever seen at the Resort.

These strong results follow the opening of The Spa at Galgorm in late 2007 which has recently been voted second “Best Spa in the World” by OK! Magazine.  The Spa has enhanced the resorts offering and resulted in a huge increase in leisure business and with the imminent launch of the prestigious Eve Lom product range and signature treatments, this upward trend is expected to continue.

Meanwhile, the River Room Restaurant has recently been awarded the coveted 2 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, while sales in Gillies Bar & Grill have grown to such a degree in the past year that an extension and a rearrangement of some of the bar area have been carried out to create an additional 50 covers.

As always, wedding business at the resort is particularly strong and it is encouraging to note that 2010 and 2011 bookings are already ahead of where they would be expected to be at this stage of 2009.  The wedding Management and Sales team has never been stronger and additional staff have recently been recruited to deal with increased demand, largely as a result of the lavish refurbishment of the Great Hall which took place in January of this year.

Commenting on the announcement of the sales figures issued, Galgorm Resort & Spa General Manager, Yvonne Moore said, “It has been well documented that the hotel and leisure industry has firmly felt the knock on affect of the global recession but so far we have been extremely fortunate and business is proving buoyant and continuing to meet and exceed budget, month on month. The conference business is the only part of the hotel that is under-performing as against budget but this is to be expected in this difficult market and luckily, other areas of the resort have more than compensated for any shortfall in this area. A focused marketing campaign has already commenced and is set to continue over the coming months to target new clients and markets to help boost this side of our business.

“We have worked extremely hard to keep Galgorm ahead of the pack, and more important still, to insulate it against the recession.  It is an idyllic setting and has long established itself as the premier wedding venue in Northern Ireland, with bookings for the coming years showing a healthy upward trend.  Life has not been easy for this industry but here at Galgorm Resort & Spa we will continue to provide
